What is a reason not to rely on the parking brake during long descents?

It can overheat the brakes or cause brake system damage, especially on long descents.

Relying on the parking brake for a long descent isn’t safe because it’s meant to hold a parked vehicle, not to control speed during a downhill run. Prolonged use can overheat the braking components, leading to brake fade, damage to shoes or drums and the hydraulic system, and reduced stopping power. The safer approach is to use engine braking with a lower gear to help slow the vehicle, and apply the service brakes in short, controlled bursts to manage heat. If the brakes overheat, their effectiveness can drop, and you may need to stop and let them cool. The other options don’t address heat buildup or braking effectiveness: the parking brake doesn’t reduce engine power, it doesn’t improve handling, and it doesn’t protect tires.

It reduces engine power.

It improves handling of the vehicle.

It protects the tires from wear.
